Here is an interesting post by Peter Leithart on how college life has been shaped by monastics life. Maybe we should look at colleges and universities as monasteries gone to seed in a bad way. The original intent that was focused on devotional life and spiritual growth that was to build people up and aid the life of the community outside the monastery has been replaced too often by lives of dissipation, pleasure seeking, and the destruction of the places in which colleges dwell.
